Recanonicalized: the per-response raw extraction records in kpi-snapshot/genre-ranking/website-builders-en/2026-08-28.json were re-matched, re-filtered and re-aggregated without calling any AI API or extraction LLM (this is not a new measurement, so the measurement timestamp is carried over from the original run) / 51 usable responses out of 60 queries sent; the remaining 9 produced no usable response (an AI query failure or a failed company-name extraction) and are excluded from the aggregation as missing data / Dropped from the table as not a company or product: Wired, techradar.com, tomsguide.com, itechguides.com, wired.com, Ascend, Fluid Engine, Gutenberg, TechRadar, Creative Bloq, Fit Small Business, SiteBuilderReport, Reddit, WebsiteBuilderExpert, Capterra, WebDesignGuide, Match‑VS, TechCognate, Forbes Advisor, AI Website Builder, Smart Traffic, AdMap, Smart Sections, Programmatic Landing Pages, Lunar, Instablocks, Zia, Smart Traffic AI, Wix Bookings, App Market, Wix SEO Wiz, Velo, Wix App Market, Studio for Agencies, Global Blocks, Core Web Vitals, G2 (rows are removed only; the denominator stays the number of usable responses, so no other figure changes)

Website builders: companies named by AI, ranked by appearance rate (highest first) Appearance rate = the share of usable responses in which the company was named at least once. Average rank = the average position the company was given within those responses (lower means named earlier).

Which Website Builders Does AI Recommend Most?

Wix, in 44 of the 51 usable answers — an 86.3% . Behind it: Squarespace 80.4%, Shopify 78.4%, Webflow 74.5%, a bare “WordPress” 68.6% and Hostinger 58.8%.

That’s from 60 queries put to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude on 2026-08-28, with no company names in the questions.

Before the numbers, do the thing that makes this readable: name the three website builders you’d expect a stranger to bring up. Most people I try this on say Wix, Squarespace and WordPress.

The top of the list is going to look like you expected. Wix comes out on top overall, and it’s near the top with every assistant — 100.0% with Claude, 80.0% with ChatGPT and Gemini apiece, 5 of Perplexity’s 6 answers. It isn’t first with all of them, though: in Perplexity’s six answers Webflow was named every time, and Wix five times.

Then it stops matching.

Webflow lands fourth at 74.5%, and it’s on three of the five comparison pages I counted in search. GoDaddy sits above it on those pages, on four of the five, and comes in at 21.6% with the models. Duda is listed on the same three pages as Webflow and comes in at 11.8%.

Webflow’s is 6.84, so it isn’t scraping in at the bottom of a long list either. It’s in the body of the answer.

The Search Lists And The Models Disagree In Both Directions

Market share would have been the better yardstick, and it wasn’t available. W3Techs publishes free usage figures anyone can check, and I measured this same environment failing to reach that site on 2026-08-10 — two refused connections, two read timeouts, and a plain request that timed out with no status code. I didn’t retry it into a different answer, and no share figure appears anywhere in this piece.

So the reference list is the same fallback as before: search "best website builders" 2026 list, then count how many of those pages name each builder as an option. Collected 2026-08-28. Five pages made the count, and I fixed all of it before measuring anything.

Five pages is a thin panel and I’d rather say so up front than bury it. One listing moves a builder a full step. One of the five is a vendor’s own page, which puts its own product first, and two more are affiliate-funded review sites. This is not a neutral industry ranking. It’s how often a name shows up in the comparison pages that rank highly in search, through a US-based search API, on one day.

Four results didn’t make the count, and the reasons are on the record: two techradar.com URLs returned byte-for-byte the same page (identical checksum, both 2,448,454 bytes), so I counted it once; sitebuilderreport.com is a review site’s front page indexing its own 28 reviews, several for products no longer sold, which would have handed nearly every builder a page; scalify.ai couldn’t be fetched at all, its TLS certificate having expired; and one more ranked AI website builders specifically, a narrower category than the one I asked about.

At the top the two lists agree. Wix and Squarespace are on all five pages and finish first and second with the models.

Under that they part, in both directions.

Going down, GoDaddy is the sharpest case: four of the five pages, and 21.6% with the models. Duda, three pages, 11.8%. Weebly, two pages, 11.8%.

Going up, Webflow is on three pages and lands at 74.5%. And Framer, which appeared on none of the five pages and never entered the reference list at all, was named in 20 of 51 answers — 39.2%, ahead of GoDaddy, Duda and Weebly individually.

No builder on the reference list drew a blank. All nine were named at least once, so there’s no “invisible in AI” story in this run, and I’d sooner tell you that than manufacture one.

What Three Of These Look Like In The Report

Our report reads a single company through three numbers: the appearance rate, the per-assistant split, and the average rank.

GoDaddy — 21.6% overall, average rank 10.27, and per assistant: Claude 40.0%, ChatGPT 33.3%, Gemini 0.0% of 15, Perplexity 0.0% of 6. Four of the five reference pages in search. The combined figure reads “named about one time in five”. The split reads “named by two assistants and by neither of the other two”, which is a different sentence with a different to-do list attached.

That difference is the whole reason to keep the columns apart. An average tells you to worry a little across the board; the split tells you which door to go knock on first.

Webflow — 74.5%, average rank 6.84, and steady: Perplexity 6 of 6, ChatGPT and Gemini 80.0% each, Claude 53.3%. Three pages in search, fourth with the models, and no assistant where it disappears. When a name holds up across four models that otherwise disagree with each other, you can stop wondering whether one model’s quirk is carrying it.

Framer — 39.2%, average rank 10.40, with ChatGPT 53.3%, Gemini 46.7%, Perplexity 2 of 6, Claude 20.0%. Zero of five comparison pages. Whatever the models are drawing on for this category, it isn’t only the pages that rank for the obvious search. That’s worth knowing before you decide the comparison-post slot is the last thing left to buy.

I want to be careful about what those three numbers are. How often a model says a name and how good the product is are two separate measurements, and this run only made the first one. I’m also not claiming that publishing more would move any of these figures; that’s a different experiment and I haven’t run it.

How This Was Measured, And What It Can’t Tell You

One run, 2026-08-28 (UTC). Five open questions, no company name in any of them, three repeats each, four models. 60 queries.

The five questions, verbatim:

  1. “What are the best website builders right now? Please name some of the main options.”
  2. “We run a small business and want to put up our own website without hiring a developer. Which website builder would you recommend?”
  3. “If you compare the leading website building platforms on features and ease of use, which ones come out on top?”
  4. “Our marketing team needs to build and update landing pages themselves. What website building platforms do teams like that usually end up using?”
  5. “Which platforms are commonly used to build and host a company website? Please name the main ones.”

Coverage, stated straight: 51 of the 60 queries produced a usable answer. ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude returned 15 each. Perplexity returned 6. The other nine Perplexity queries came back rate-limited, and every Perplexity percentage here is out of 6 answers rather than 15 — which is why I’ve written the fraction next to it each time instead of only the percentage. Gemini has come back completely empty in earlier runs of this measurement, so I check it before letting it into a table; this time it answered all 15.

A 0.0% from Perplexity in this run is not evidence that Perplexity won’t name something. Six answers is a small window, and I’m reporting what fell inside it.

On name-matching, I merged variants only where this run actually showed them splitting. “Hostinger WB” folded into Hostinger (it appeared once, with the full name alongside it). “Amazon Web Services (AWS)” folded into AWS, the string being its own proof.

What I did not merge is more interesting here. The models produced three separate WordPress strings — a bare “WordPress” at 68.6%, “WordPress.org” at 35.3% and “WordPress.com” at 29.4% — and I’ve left all three as their own rows. They co-occur: 17 of the 18 answers naming WordPress.org named a bare “WordPress” beside it, and 13 of the 15 naming WordPress.com did too, so the models are treating these as different things rather than writing one name twice. Folding them together would have manufactured a single figure the answers don’t support. Only WordPress.com made the reference list, on two of five pages.

I also dropped 37 strings that aren’t companies in this category. About half are vendor feature names, and the ones I listed here never appeared without their vendor: “Fluid Engine” with Squarespace in all 6 of its answers, “App Market” with Wix in all 6, “Instablocks” with Instapage in all 4, “Gutenberg” with WordPress in all 6. Most of the rest are tech and review publications rather than builders. The last few are a Google performance metric, the generic phrase “AI website builder”, and two strings I couldn’t pin to any product at all. Dropping a row never moves anyone else’s percentage; the denominator is the number of usable answers either way.

The four assistants don’t even produce the same quantity of names: 76 distinct ones from Gemini, 70 from ChatGPT, 38 from Claude, and 19 from Perplexity across its 6 answers, for 133 rows altogether.

And 15 answers per model is a small sample. It’s enough to tell “named nearly every time” from “hardly ever named”.

It isn’t enough to argue about a two-point gap.

Check Every Assistant Separately Before You Buy The Next Comparison Post

The number I keep coming back to is Framer’s 39.2% off zero comparison pages.

Not because Framer is the story. Because the reference list — the pages that rank for the search everyone in this category optimises for — didn’t predict the order the models produced, in either direction. GoDaddy is on four of those five pages, and two assistants never said the name once — Gemini in 15 answers, Perplexity in the 6 it managed.

Maybe I’m wrong about how far that generalises. One category, one day, 51 usable answers, five reference pages, and one assistant that only answered six times. I’d want a second run before moving anyone’s budget on the strength of a single row.

The useful move doesn’t wait on that. Put your competitors in the rows and one column per assistant, and read the columns before the average — a name that’s strong in two models and absent in the other two vanishes into a combined score, and that pattern is the one worth finding.

Then put a repeat in the calendar. One ask is a photograph of something that keeps moving, and the rate only starts to mean something once you have a few of them side by side.
