You’ve got an analytics tab open somewhere right now. Most of us do — it’s been sitting there since Monday.
So, a question you can answer in about four seconds. If one of your buyers asked ChatGPT which analytics tool to use, would ChatGPT’s shortlist and yours be the same shortlist?
I wrote my own three down before I ran anything, specifically so I couldn’t quietly revise them afterwards. Two of my three didn’t make the models’ top five.
But my score wasn’t the interesting part. The four assistants didn’t agree with each other either, and they start disagreeing one row down from the top.
So I asked them properly. Five open questions, no company name anywhere in the wording, three repeats each, four models — 60 answers in all — and then I counted every name that came back.
One note before the table. All four models answered all 15 of their queries this time, so every 0.0% below is a measured zero: the model replied and simply didn’t say the name. That’s a different thing from a model that failed to reply, and you should know which one you’re looking at.
AI RANKING REPORT
Web analytics tools
We asked the AI models without naming any company, and counted only the companies the AI brought up on its own.
Recanonicalized: the per-response raw extraction records in kpi-snapshot/genre-ranking/web-analytics-en/2026-08-10.json were re-matched, re-filtered and re-aggregated without calling any AI API or extraction LLM (this is not a new measurement, so the measurement timestamp is carried over from the original run) / 60 usable responses out of 60 queries sent; the remaining 0 produced no usable response (an AI query failure or a failed company-name extraction) and are excluded from the aggregation as missing data / Dropped from the table as not a company or product: Ads, g2.com, trustradius.com, G2, Plausible / Fathom, Mixpanel / PostHog, GDPR, Capterra, Discovery (rows are removed only; the denominator stays the number of usable responses, so no other figure changes)

Which Web Analytics Tools Does AI Recommend Most?
Google Analytics, in every single answer — 60 of 60, a 100.0% , and 100.0% in each of the four assistants separately. Behind it the order runs Matomo 96.7%, Plausible 93.3%, Mixpanel 90.0%, Fathom Analytics 75.0% and Amplitude 71.7%.
That’s from 60 queries put to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude on 2026-08-10, with no company names in the questions.
One Name Was Unanimous. Everything Under It Splits.
Google Analytics didn’t just show up everywhere; it showed up early. Its is 1.40, which means it’s usually the first name out of the model’s mouth.
Then things come apart.
Fathom Analytics is the cleanest case. It sits at 75.0% overall, which reads as a solid, slightly unremarkable result — until you split it by assistant.
ChatGPT named it in all 15 of its answers (100.0%). Claude 93.3%, Gemini 86.7%. Perplexity named it in 3 of 15, or 20.0%.
Perplexity answered all fifteen times. It just mostly didn’t say the name.
It runs the other way too, which is why I don’t think the story is “Perplexity names fewer things”. Hotjar: Perplexity 93.3%, Gemini and Claude 80.0% apiece, ChatGPT 20.0%. Microsoft Clarity: Gemini and Claude 80.0%, Perplexity 73.3%, ChatGPT 33.3%. Adobe Analytics: Claude 80.0%, Gemini 60.0%, Perplexity 40.0%, ChatGPT 26.7%.
And some names live almost entirely inside a single assistant. Simple Analytics: ChatGPT 93.3%, Claude 60.0%, Gemini 0.0%, Perplexity 0.0%. Swetrix: ChatGPT 66.7%, Gemini 6.7%, nothing at all from the other two. Looker Studio runs the opposite way, at Gemini 73.3% and Claude 0.0%.
The assistants don’t even produce the same quantity of names. Across the run ChatGPT gave 79 distinct companies, Gemini 49, Claude 31 and Perplexity 26, for 102 altogether.
The Search Lists And The Models Disagree In Both Directions
Market share would have made the better yardstick, and it was my first choice. W3Techs publishes free usage figures for traffic analysis tools that any reader can go and check for themselves.
I couldn’t reach the site.
Three fetches failed (one refused connection, two read timeouts), a direct request timed out with no status code at all, and the root domain timed out as well. So I never read a single share figure, and you won’t find one in this piece — a number I didn’t read isn’t a number I get to quote.
The fallback was plain: search "best web analytics tools" 2026 list, then count how many of those pages name each tool as an option. Collected 2026-08-10, seven pages in the count. I built it before measuring anything, so I couldn’t tune it to the result afterwards.
Those seven pages are not a neutral panel, and here it matters more than usual. Six of the seven list a product from their own house, and five of those put their own tool in first place. (I left out an eighth result — a directory ranking 72 tools — since counting it would hand almost every product a page.)
Right at the top, the two lists agree. Google Analytics is on all seven pages and hits 100.0%. Mixpanel is on all seven too, at 90.0%.
Under that they diverge, and they do it both ways.
Adobe Analytics is the sharpest case going down: five of seven pages, fourth on the reference list, and 51.7% with the models, where it comes ninth. Contentsquare, three pages, 16.7%. Kissmetrics, two pages, 6.7%.
Going up, Plausible sits on four of seven pages and lands at 93.3% — third overall, and ahead of Adobe Analytics in all four assistants individually. Fathom Analytics, also four pages, comes in at 75.0%. Two names that never even cleared my bar for the reference list (one page each) turned up constantly anyway: Simple Analytics at 38.3%, Swetrix at 18.3%.
No company on the reference list drew a blank, though. All 15 were named at least once across the 60 answers, so this run has no “invisible in AI” story in it, and I’d sooner tell you that than manufacture one.
What Three Of These Look Like In The Report
Our report reads a single company through three numbers: the appearance rate, the per-assistant split, and the average rank.
Adobe Analytics — 51.7%, average rank 8.84, and per assistant: Claude 80.0%, Gemini 60.0%, Perplexity 40.0%, ChatGPT 26.7%. Five of the seven reference pages. The combined figure says “named about half the time”. The split says “named by Claude four times in five, and by ChatGPT one time in four”, which is a different sentence.
Plausible — 93.3%, average rank 7.63, and steady across the board: ChatGPT 100.0%, Gemini 100.0%, Claude 93.3%, Perplexity 80.0%. Four of seven pages in search, near-universal in the answers, no assistant where it drops out.
Simple Analytics — 38.3%, average rank 11.09, with ChatGPT 93.3%, Claude 60.0%, Gemini 0.0%, Perplexity 0.0%. One comparison page, which put it under my cutoff for the reference list. Half the assistants say it constantly; the other half never said it once.
I want to be careful about what those three numbers are, though. How often a model says your name and how good your product is are two separate measurements, and this run only made the first one. I’m also not claiming that publishing more would shift any of these figures — that’s a different experiment, and I haven’t run it.
How This Was Measured, And What It Can’t Tell You
One run, 2026-08-10 (UTC). Five open questions, no company name in any of them, three repeats each, four models. 60 queries.
The five questions, verbatim:
- “What are the best web analytics tools right now? Please name some of the main options.”
- “Our marketing team wants to understand how visitors find and use our website. Which web analytics platform would you recommend?”
- “If you compare the leading web analytics platforms on features and ease of use, which ones come out on top?”
- “What web analytics software do small businesses and agencies usually end up using?”
- “Which tools are commonly used for measuring website traffic, visitor behaviour and conversions? Please name the main ones.”
Coverage, stated straight: 60 of the 60 queries produced a usable answer. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude returned 15 each, and no company-name extraction failed. Gemini has come back completely empty in earlier runs of this measurement, so I check it every time before I let it into a table; this time it answered all 15, which is the only reason it’s in the columns above.
On name-matching, I merged variants of one product only where this run actually showed them splitting.
A bare “Clarity” folded into Microsoft Clarity (it never once appeared without the full name alongside it). “Piwik” folded into Matomo, since it turned up with Matomo in all 13 of its answers and never once beside Piwik PRO — which is a different company’s product and keeps its own row. “Data Studio” folded into Looker Studio, its current name. A bare “Google” I left exactly where it was, because it could mean any of several Google products here and guessing would inflate one of them.
I also dropped nine strings that aren’t companies: a regulation (GDPR); four that are software review sites rather than vendors here (G2 twice, once as a bare name and once as a domain, plus Capterra and TrustRadius); a bare “Discovery”, an ordinary English word I couldn’t pin to any product; a fragment where the extractor sheared “Ads” off “Google Ads”; and two cases where a model named two products joined by a slash (“Plausible / Fathom”). That last one pushes Plausible’s and Fathom’s rates slightly down rather than up, and I’d rather undercount than invent an attribution. Dropping a row never moves anyone else’s percentage anyway; the denominator is the number of usable answers either way.
A fair few names in the long tail I couldn’t match to any product I know. I’ve left them in the table. Whether they’re small tools I’ve never met or the model filling a gap is something this measurement genuinely can’t settle, and quietly deleting them would hide a real property of the answers.
And 15 answers per model is a small sample. It’s enough to tell “named nearly every time” from “hardly ever named”.
It isn’t enough to argue about a two-point gap.
Build The Table With One Column Per Assistant
The number I keep coming back to is the distance between 26.7% and 80.0%.
Same company, same day, same five questions — just a different assistant answering. That’s Adobe Analytics, and a combined score of 51.7% swallows the entire gap.
Maybe I’m wrong about how far that generalizes. One category, one day, 60 answers, and a reference list drawn from seven pages that were mostly written by vendors. I’d want a second run before I moved anyone’s budget on the strength of a single row.
The useful move doesn’t wait on that, though. When you go and check where your own brand stands, build the table with your competitors in the rows and one column per assistant. A name that’s strong in one model and absent in two vanishes completely into an average, and that pattern is the one actually worth finding.
Then put a repeat in the calendar. One ask is a photograph of something that keeps moving, and the rate only starts to mean anything once you’ve got a few of them side by side.
